Support your youth | International Youth Day
Today is International Youth Day, which was created by the United Nations (UN) to recognise the difficulties and challenges that many young people face around the world. This can be anything from mental and social challenges to the extremities of lacking basic needs like schooling, health, and employment.
The day was created to share the importance of making sure all young people have the chance of creating a better future for themselves by having access to resources such as education or wellbeing.
It’s an important part of this movement to give a voice to our young people and encourage them to speak up, engage and understand their needs and what opportunities can and should be available to them. We hold this idea and value at Transitions UK as we want to allow our young people to take control of their futures. We help support them to understand their goals and what needs to be done to achieve them and we do this through encouragement from their volunteer mentors to speak up about their struggles.
This year’s theme shared by SwikBlog is “Creating a World for All Ages” meaning that the improvements we make for our youth can ultimately benefit all generations.
Some topics that are consistently addressed are things such as ageism, which can affect the younger and older generations. It’s important that we have conversations about these topics to gain a better understanding of other viewpoints and work towards having more unity throughout all generations. Within our charity, we often pair our young people with volunteer mentors, which can be of any age. They share stories, similarities, and experiences to grow their relationship, and both gain an understanding for each other as they work towards a goal of creating better and brighter future for them both.
As a young people’s charity, we are aware that many young people do not get the same start in life and many face extreme difficulties that may cause them to have setbacks. We strive on providing opportunities for young people and giving equal chances at life no matter where the young person has come from or what struggles they may have. We specialise in supporting those who have had experience in the care system, are at risk of exploitation, have mental health challenges or have learning difficulties or disabilities.
