THEY NEED YOUR HELP

In 2019, Transitions UK were helping around 100 vulnerable young people, but we are now supporting over 300!

Our volunteer mentors are doing an amazing job, but they’re now seeing mental health feature prominently in the lives of their young people due to the pandemic. Without the necessary support, these and other young people face a lifetime of disadvantage.

This is an imminent public health crisis and we need your help!

WITHOUT INCREASED FUNDS WE CANNOT SUPPORT OUR YOUNG PEOPLE

Our services are being overwhelmed by requests for support.

Most of which we cannot meet without significant financial investment in our services. We expect demand for our services to increase at a level we cannot currently cope with due to a lack of funding.

As it stands one project for 15 young people costs on average £40,000 per year. In 2019, we were helping around 100, but we are now supporting over 300 very vulnerable young people and this number will continue to grow.

We urgently need funds to increase our levels of service, otherwise young people in the UK will suffer in silence with no support.

We provide befriending and mentoring services to those who suffer with mental health and emotional needs.

We provide the young people on our projects with 1-3 mentors, depending on their needs, and aim towards personal development, improving confidence and self esteem, reducing self harm and looking at further opportunities such as independent accommodation, next steps in education or full-time and part-time work

One of our projects, supporting just 15 young people, costs £45,000 per year. We are now supporting over 300 and we can’t to it alone!

Please donate to our Appeal so we can continue to provide and deliver the support needed for our disadvantaged young people in the UK.

The number of young people in our society with mental health and emotional needs is spiralling. These young people who are suffering with mental health issues have experienced childhood trauma, social exclusion and have become extremely vulnerable in society.

They are often described as the ‘lost-generation’.

The staff and volunteer mentors of Transitions UK are supporting three times as many disadvantaged young people as they were in 2019, with the level of adolescents presenting with mental health concerns have jumped from 50% to more than 90%.

These concerns are mostly anxiety, depression and trauma that have built over the past two years.

16.9% of 17-19 year olds reported a mental health or emotional disorder in 2018 and this is only increasing due to the recent pandemic! That’s 10% of males and 24% of females. 53% of those females reporting had self-harmed or attempted suicide.

As mental health during adolescence has been shown to have a significant impact well into mid-life. Transitions UK Chief Executive says the UK is on the brink of a crisis that will last a generation if young people’s recovery from mental ill health is not urgently supported.

Delays in accessing NHS treatment means that many of our young people have struggled to improve upon their mental health and emotional needs in a healthy way. An example would be the care leavers that we support who are no stranger to having a sense of abandonment or feeling let down by the care system and other support services that are unable to provide the support they need to survive, let alone thrive.

The Covid-19 pandemic, and its resulting school closures and disbanding of support networks, have been devastating for their feelings of self-worth, loneliness and their confidence. The pandemic has negatively impacted their chances of developing their social skills and has destroyed the chances of growing their networks with positive individuals.

We at Transitions UK, put these aspects at the forefront of the work we do with young people.

The Research Centre for Child Psychiatry (RCCP) found that access by children and young people to mental health services fell by 40% in the early part of the pandemic. Assistant Professor David Gyllenberg said: “Unmet mental health needs or delays in accessibility to appropriate care area significant public health concern.”

The pandemic put a huge strain on the services attempting to provide mental health services to those in need due to the overwhelming demand.

Transitions UK is a charity that helps support to those who cannot get those services due to long waiting periods. We are important as we support those who are at a key part in their lives where they need support from all angles - the transition between childhood to adulthood.

Akujuobi was suffering from depression, anxiety, loneliness ,and helplessness.

With the help of his volunteer mentor, they both began meeting up regularly and working on his personal development and his mentor helped Akujuobi figure out his future plans. They designed a PATH Plan and Development Web which are two tools we use at Transitions UK to help them both understand the best steps to take to get Akujuobi to his next steps

After a 2 year mentoring programme with us, Akujuobi is now confident, happy and fulfilling his dreams.
