You are the support that changes young lives | Volunteers Week
Our volunteers are one of the main reasons we, at Transitions UK, can do what we do every day!
This week is Volunteers Week, which is an annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering. It’s an important time, especially for us, to take a step back and appreciate those who have donated their time to help services that they believe in.
For us, those volunteers are choosing to change the lives of vulnerable young people.
They choose to dedicate their own time every week to supporting, guiding, and educating those who struggle the most when moving into independence and into adulthood.
The reason volunteers are so key to our charity is because they are the positive figure in their young person’s life who they can confide in and receive advice to help better their lives and futures. A Transitions UK mentor can help a young person with a multitude of things such as developing their confidence, improving their social skills, helping them with going into further education, supporting them in getting a job or even aiding in them moving into new accommodation. Each mentorship is completely unique and full of opportunities for the young person and mentor to grow.
Volunteering not only allows for an amazing mentorship to blossom but also allows for many likeminded people to come together to support each other as well. It is proven by many of our own volunteers that their lives have also been positively impacted by our services and not just our young people’s.
We asked those who support our Achieve Project each week to share their opinion on volunteering, the impact it has made on their lives and whether they would recommend becoming a volunteer to others:
“My name is Aisha and I have been volunteering with Transitions UK, Achieve hub in Luton for nearly a year. The positive atmosphere here drives you with motivation and inspiration. Being able to make a difference to a young person’s life has been the most enjoyable experience of my life. I would definitely recommend and have previously recommended the charity to others. It’s honestly a blessing to be able to help others.”
“Hi this is Zohaib, I volunteer here at Transitions. The positives are the people. You are able to serve the needs of an underrepresented group in society, and the ability to serve others and know that their lives are positively impacted is an incredibly rewarding experience. You grow a special attachment towards these people. You remember the smalls things, admire, and appreciate the highs and are there to support them with their lows. The environment is one of acceptance, the ability to make mistakes to share on one's experience and better to each other. To summarise it’s a great place to volunteer to help the community and to better yourself as a person.
“My name is Mubara and I’ve been volunteering with Transitions Achieve Hub since October 2021. I would say the best thing about transitions is the people, from the young people to the volunteers. Everyone compliments each other so well and it’s really like a big family! I would absolutely recommend Transitions to anyone looking for new volunteering opportunities.”
“I have been volunteering at Transitions UK for over a month. My experience so far has been wonderful. I enjoy working with the different service users and watching them all become more confidence each session. I would recommend Transitions UK to anyone looking to help out in the community and who wants to make a change.”
“My favourite part about volunteering with Transitions UK is meeting so many wonderful young people with different needs who are unique and friendly. I recommend volunteering with Transitions UK because it is a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills and meet people as well as do something rewarding that benefits the young people and you. Volunteering with Transitions UK has helped me to gain a lot of confidence with my social skills and to gain valuable work experience I have put on my CV which is benefiting me in my search for paid work in health and social care”
We appreciate all the volunteers we have in each and every one of our projects as they have a passion and drive for helping those with disadvantages become the best versions of themselves.
We cannot thank those enough for joining our journey and being the support that changes young lives.
